Maths

At Gurney Pease Academy, our vision for Mathematics is to deliver a subject that prepares pupils for the future by ensuring that they are numerate, confident with number, strategic thinkers and logical problem solvers. Mathematics enables children to develop enquiring minds as well as a pro-active approach to problem solving thereby providing them with skills that transcend the Mathematics Curriculum and develop resilience, ingenuity, self-discipline and a sense of confidence and fulfilment that comes from using learnt knowledge to problem solve.

Maths is taught discretely as a subject in its own right but also within and across other curriculum areas. Children are taught the basics and then given opportunities to use and apply what they have learnt in rich and meaningful contexts and thus develop mathematical fluency.

Mathematics is a tool for everyday life. It is a whole network of concepts and relationships, which provide a way of viewing and making sense of the world. It is used to analyse and communicate information and ideas and to tackle a range of practical tasks and real-life problems.

Through daily Mathematics lessons, we aim to develop fluency of number and calculation skills, as well as reasoning and problem-solving skills, all of which can be confidently applied in real life situations and contexts.

Mathematics is at the heart of everyday life and is a vital skill.
